programs & services

Prevention Network offers several programs for parents, grandparents and guardians raising children in today’s culture. See an overview of our programs here, or scroll down to browse.

parent to parent

Parent to Parent is a video-based training program developed by Bill Oliver. Its goal is to produce confident, competent, and committed parents capable and willing to guide their children around the influences of today’s toxic culture.

The program features 8 individual video-based sessions aimed at strengthening parents’ skills and, in turn, the communities in which they live. Designed as a series, the sessions can be stand-alone classes which allow extreme flexibility to reach parents on their timeline. Parents do not have to complete the entire program to gain significant benefit.

The content of Parent to Parent is:

Module Two Purpose

To have the parent/guardian understand that violence is learned behavior and is used to meet legitimate needs.

Module Three Purpose

To have the parent/guardian understand the purposes of the Model/Mentor/Monitor roles and some principles for fulfilling them.

Module Four Purpose

To have the parent/guardian understand some specific principles for fulfilling the motivator role.

Although designed as a series, each session can be a stand-alone to accommodate the needs of the audience.

guiding good choices

Guiding Good Choices is a researched-based program that teaches parents of children ages 9-14 (grades 4-8) how to reduce the risk that their children will develop drug problems. This five-session curriculum is based on research conducted by Dr. J. David Hawkins and Dr. Richard F. Catalano of the University of Washington. They found clear evidence that the child-rearing practices, attitudes, values, and behaviors of parents influence whether or not their children will use drugs. This evidence underlines the importance of involving parents in prevention, and has guided the development of this program.

Guiding Good Choices consists of five two-hour workshops, held once a week for five consecutive weeks. Workshop topics are appropriate for a wide and diverse audience.

Session 1: Getting Started – How to Prevent Drug Use in Your Family

Parents learn about the nature and extent of the drug problem among teenagers and decide for themselves how they want to prevent problems in their own families.

Session 2: Setting Guidelines – How to Develop Healthy Beliefs and Clear Standards

Clear family guidelines and expectations for behavior within the family are discussed.

Session 3: Avoiding Trouble – How to Say No to Drugs

Children and parents are invited to this session. They learn skills children can use for staying out of trouble, while keeping their friends and still having fun.

Session 4: Managing Conflict – How to Control and Express Your Anger Constructively

Managing family conflict in a way that maintains and strengthens bonds with children is the focus of this session.

Session 5: Involving Everyone – How to Strengthen Family Bonds

Parents learn ways to strengthen family bonds and increase children’s involvement in the family during their teen years. Parents also learn how to create a parent support network.

Guiding Good Choices workshops can be scheduled at any time. Contact Prevention Network at 315.471.1359.

strengthening families I & II

Strengthening Families I & II is an evidence-based program that offers parenting support to parents that are chemically addicted, while offering life skills education to their children. There are two sessions available depending on the age of the children; a seven week or fourteen week program.

Evenings consist of separate skill development time for parents and children, then time together where families can practice the skills they have learned. The conclusion of the evening is a structured meal time where all families and staff join together and process the evening activities. Incentives are offered to families to help with transportation and motivation.
